A Sore Bum

Things are a bit hairy here. The Mintlet has a severe case of nappy rash. I thought liberally applying Sudocreme would make it disappear but now it is day 3 and it is spreading. To see the angry red rashes across her tender butt is heartrending. She twists away if you try to change her nappy. But of course now, I have to change it much more frequently.

I want to see how it is tomorrow and decide if I should take her to the doctor or not.

We had just been to the doctor’s today, for her MMR and some other jab. When I mentioned to the nurse that the baby has a bad case of nappy rash, Nurse just told me to apply some nappy cream, all the time exclaiming what a lovely baby The Mintlet was, for not bringing the house down after getting a jab each in her thighs.

I want to get into an outdoor routine for her. Playgroups on Wednesdays and a Mum-and-child swimming session on Fridays. But things aren’t working so well in that area. I really need to pull up my socks and get to it!

Why is it even the simplest of things can cause a parent to

    Oho! Poor baby!!

    Have you tried this? http://www.cvs.com/CVSApp/catalog/shop_product_detail.jsp?filterBy=null&skuId=103093&productId=103093&navAction=push&navCount=5&no_new_crumb=true

This one has 40% zinc oxide as opposed to 11% that other ointments usually have. This has tided us over many a nappy rashes. M used to get NASTY, bleeding rashes every time she ate eggs. Now I just slather it on whenever I see a rash coming on. I have tried other ointments that “claim” to have 40% zinc oxide but this is the ONLY one that really works. Do you want me to send you a tub from here?

    • Lavanya says:

thank you cee. have been told to try E45. I normally go with Sudocreme. Popping out to the chemist today to buy E45. Let’s see how it works. And thanks for the offer!!

  • Arvind says:

my google reader said there was a post by you called “kali klum” which looked ripe for me to jump in. did you delete it coz you realized it?

    • Lavanya says:

yep. realised it. i must have written it to get it off my head and just let it be. published it by mistake. thankfully realised it and deleted it straightaway.

  • Arvind says:

would you be offended if someone dressed as gandhi? or would the flying spaghetti monster costume bother you more?

    • Lavanya says:

hmm tricky. esp a religious discussion with you!

    • Lavanya says:

ok so I thought about it. I think if someone dressed up as Gandhi for Halloween, I would be offended. Halloween is supposed to be spooky, kooky stuff, not razzing other people and/or their beliefs etc.

      • Cee kay says:

I don’t take offense easily – maybe because I am not very religious. But I agree with you – Halloween is fun dressing up as mythical creatures or as characters from works of fiction. Not as someone’s religious symbols.

        • Lavanya says:

Oh I wouldn’t advice you to get into a religious discussion with my brother! You’d end up an atheist!

          • Cee kay says:

LOL! It would be really easy too (converting me to an atheist) as I am sitting on the fence most days anyway :P

          • Lavanya says:

LOL! Then I suggest you jump in on this and let my brother convert you!

          • Cee Kay says:

            Sure, why not? :P

But Arvind, be warned – if I can be easily converted to an atheist, it should be easy to turn me towards religion too – no? Dangers of trying to influence a fickle mind :D

          • Arvind says:

am not trying to convert anyone. that is your free will. i used to be on the fence for a while, out of laziness. and then just decided to think more and here I am.

          • Arvind says:

ah, there’s a ‘thread’ sorta thing going on here eh… hmm.. didnt get that.. sis, you should look at plugging disqus into your blog, considering you have a lot of discussions

          • Lavanya says:

I did da – had Disqus and then Intense Debate. Malfunctioned and the comments ended up appearing in different posts so took everything off. Maybe I’ll try again.

  • Premalatha says:

apply hydrocortisone to get rid of the angry rash first and then go for metanium after every nappy change. works like magic. hydrocortisone would need a prescription either from the health visitor or from GP. metanium is available over the counter, but can get a prescription for metanium too. sudocreme doesn’t work for nasty nappy rash. E45 is just a moisturiser and doesn’t work to get rid of the angry nappy rash and is not a barrier cream either. Vaseline (petroleum jelly) is a better barrier cream than sudocreme. you may also want to check if it is a fungal infection. in that case, you would need clotrimazole, which also needs prescription. in any case, you need to see your GP asap.

    • Lavanya says:

Blimey! Now you’ve scared the pants off me!! Pratik had nappy rashes and I never took him to the GP.

      • Cee kay says:

Take Prateek to the GP ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!

        • Cee kay says:

Jokes apart Lavs, I wouldn’t apply hydrocortisone on a 1 yr old’s bum without consulting a doctor first. Any thing stronger than the strongest diaper rash ointment – I’d ask the doc. Not worth it to take risk in the matters of young, delicate skin.

          • Lavanya says:

Ah. Good tip, cee. Thanks! I was rummaging through my kit to see if I had any left. Am applying some calendula on it. It isn’t bumpy so am going to see how it goes today.

  • Lavs says:

So sorry to hear abt minty’s condition…have been thro it plenty of times with LB….I have no creams for you but a simple home remedy…
apply turmeric paste liberally on the rashes during one nappy change…for the next nappy change apply whatever cream you have been prescribed(sudocrem/barrier cream)…keep alternating…tho the bum might look extremely jaundicied, the itching and irritation will come down in one day flat…turmeric also prevents spread of rashes…my mom kept telling me to do this but i told her off saying all nappy creams are better until i tried turnmeric during one bad episode and ate my own words!!!!

Also pls check whether she developed this rash due to any new food introduced…some times vaccines can compound problems….do leave the bottom open(quite tough but it does help in reduction) when Minty sleeps…even 1 hour airing works wonders….
    good luck

    • Lavanya says:

Lavs – thanks for the turmeric tip. Will try it out later this morning. Am thinking the chesty cold she has has got something to do with this. Dunno. And unf I cant leave her nappy free for long. Did that for 30 mins yday and she promptly pooped. Spent a long time cleaning the carpet!

      • Lavs says:

that’s why i suggested to keep her off nappy when she is sleeping….chances of poop/pee are less….yee, cleaning carpet…i do pity you…how does minty react seeing her own poop? LB runs to stamp them so i need to get the cleaning part done in a jiffy else i am finished!

Hope Minty is feeling better now

        • Lavanya says:

no re. she moves about too much in her sleep. plus if she wets herself and the bedclothes, in this weather, she can make her cold worse.

anyways, have been applying calendula and it seems to be working. fingers crossed!! wasnt at home much today so couldnt try out turmeric. will see tmw.

oh she stamped her poo into the carpet too. mucky pip!

  • dipali says:

Poor little baby bum. I hope she’s better soon. No gyaan:(

  • B o o. says:

I just remembered. It can be coz of the cold. babies swallow the phlegm and it comes out with the potty and the acidic nature gives them rash. use the rash cream as a preventive measure in future. i ve noticed that applying the cream as soon as I see the redness is better than tacking it later. Hugs. nappy rashes are tough on babies and moms!

  • Arvind says:

uh, and who made this rule that religion cannot be discussed or mocked? tastes, political stances, movies that one likes, girls(or boys) that one likes and far more important and worthwhile things can be discussed and mocked. but oh no, you cannot mock religion. why? coz you cannot mock it. nonsense. i will discuss it. this fake taboo that people imposed for fear of not being able to defend themselves on religion is invalid.

    • Lavanya says:

I dunno who made the rule that religion is a no-go area but I guess, considering the fact that it is a weightier subject than say, Scream Vs. Nightmare on Elm Street, it is advisable to stay away from the same and not offend random folks’ sensibilities. What thinks you?

      • Arvind says:

uh, it is not a weightier subject. in fact, how are they different from ghost stories? this is precisely the rule – the rule that religion cannot be questioned. Why? coz it cant? Why? just coz. am not gonna try and irritate random people (that was my previous life) but am not gonna shut up and agree to things, nor am i gonna let religious statements pass. well, until I get tired, that is..

        • Lavanya says:

It is weightier cos religion means a lot to the people who believe in God and the assorted trappings. And to many people, it serves as a well worn crutch and to question it might mean knocking off the crutch. So.

Imagine Paaps. Can you imagine her shunning God? Even after Shraddha, she still went back to God to question, to rage yes but it was to religion she turned to.

I can’t see people doing the same with the Wes Craven classics, do you?

          ps: previous life? bwahahaha!

          • Cee Kay says:

I think the “do not mock” rule should apply to anything and everything that people take seriously. What I mean is – I wouldn’t mock religion in front of someone who is very religious just like I wouldn’t mock, say, cricket, in front of someone who is a die-hard fan. General courtesy. No?

          • Arvind says:

hmm, whatever works for them is no more a defense. you cant see people turning to wes craven classics for what? solace? that’s not really true. I read Wodehouse if I feel sad. Why is it better believing one made up concept over another? coz a group of damn schemers have been repeating it for ages. how can (you) people find scientology and/or mormonism stupid but not see that the rest of the stuff is the same thing but many hundred years later?

    • Cee Kay says:

Agree with Arvind here – why can’t one mock religion? It is, after all, man-made too. Sorry lavs! :P

      • Arvind says:

i dont mean ‘mock’. I agree with your previous ‘general courtesy’ comment. What I meant was, I would discuss cricket and/or raise objections to your opinions. For example, I think Sourav Ganguly is one of the worst things that happened to Indian cricket. We could argue about it. Sure. The thing is, we are allowed to and no one will see anything wrong. But at the same time if you believe in something (“I dont eat meat on Thu” crap), I cant ask you why you are a dumb fuck? lame. so, i decided i will. if you are so religious and dont want to talk to me after that, we probably wouldnt get along over the long run after all.

        • Cee kay says:

It is true that it is difficult to argue/have a debate over religion because people are so darn touchy about it. Leave alone a debate between someone religious and an atheist – even a debate between two people of the same religion who follow different religious practices can get overheated fast. I believe that is because 1) most people don’t know how to disagree and still be polite and friendly 2)most people don’t know how to accept that there are different strokes for different folks.

Also, I think, over the years, to maintain their control over society, Brahmins – the “religion-keepers” of society – MADE discussions on religion a taboo because, maybe, they didn’t have proper explanations themselves. So everything became “ye aise hi hota hai”, “ye paap hai”, “The Gods will get upset” and suchlike.

        • Lavanya says:

Well I don’t believe in the not eating meat on one day out of deference to a God concept either. Hypocritical, it seems to me. Eat it or don’t.

  • sraikh says:

I hope the rash is getting better.
Letting her bum air dry helps, I’m sure you know this already :)

  • AJ says:

Appo, I see like 14,212 suggestions on what to apply to the lil one’s cutie bum. I don’t know if coconut oil and camphor (preferable the desi version) is available there, but if yes, just take 1/2 camphor, soak it in some coconut oil, blend it well and apply. Takes care of any rashes. Works good for adults too :=)
